Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
