This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but beneath Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
