The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
