The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
