EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
