British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
